Education & Training Case Studies

Case studies provide some relevant insight into how Fortis Consulting personnel have delivered value for our Education & Training clients.

Our wealth of experience in shaping education and training solutions are outlined as follows in terms of some relevant and recent case studies.

Case Study 1: Migrant Pathways to Employment

Project Scope: The project was delivered for a large government agency, and involved providing overseas trained migrants with skills recognition and gap training in mainstream vocational areas with industry specific English language support.

Services Provided: Fortis staff identified industries that had a need for experienced, qualified staff and matched them with the qualifications and experience of migrants. We supervised the course design that allowed migrants with the relevant qualifications and experience to reduce the time required to upgrade their qualifications, skills and language, while achieving the required industry standards.

Project Outcomes: The Pathways program overcame the wastage that occurs when industry has a skill shortage while there are skilled migrants who are unable to capitalise on their skills due to cultural and language barriers. The project provided a key to preventing under-employment and unemployment for migrants from non-English speaking countries.

Case Study 2: TAFE - Establishing AQTF

Project Scope: This project, delivered for a large TAFE college, required careful consideration of the professional standards, policies and procedures required by Australian Qualifications Training Framework (AQTF) and developing the momentum and commitment of teachers and administrators to meet the rigorous demands for implementation.

Services Provided:  The project included the planning, development and implementation required to meet the audit requirements to obtain Registered Training Organisation (RTO) status.

Project Outcomes: The TAFE School gained an unqualified audit result and Registered Training Organisation status.

Case Study 3: University Optimisation Research

Project Scope: A large university required research into its administrative performance measured against national and global benchmarks.  They required a detailed report outlining key gaps and a solution blueprint for addressing these gaps.

Services Provided:  Fortis delivered a robust diagnostic which measured and benchmarked administrative performance.  This was followed by a detailed gap analysis and solution blueprint, including detailed implementation and benefits realisation plan.

Project Outcomes: The University approved the business case which enabled the implementation of key recommended improvements which led to improved service levels and several million dollars of annual savings.

Case Study 4: TAFE Research Model

Project Scope: A large TAFE college required assistance to develop a research model for its training delivery programs. Key VET sector data (both economic and non-economic) was required from a variety of sources as input into the model (helping to identify industry trends and requirements for changes in training programs).

Services Provided: Fortis staff provided a basis for forecasting current trends and providing a relevant split for future training needs.

Project Outcomes: Ultimately the research model provided key information to the TAFE college in the future mix of courses and the key development areas.  Furthermore the model was readily updated and maintained by college staff.

Strategy and Research Case Studies

Case studies provide some relevant insight into how Fortis Consulting personnel have delivered value for our Strategy & Research clients.

Our wealth of experience in delivering strategy and research solutions are outlined as follows in terms of some relevant and recent case studies.

Case Study 1: National Research on Strategy to Improve Nurse Utilisation

Project Scope: This National research reviewed strategies to improve utilisation of the skills of overseas trained nurses. Fortis personnel delivered this key research project with national and State ministerial support. The project was completed in partnership with DETWA and involved State VET providers and industry representatives.

Services Provided: The research examined strategies for assessing accomplishment of professional standards of overseas trained nurses that ensured transparent, credible, efficient and effective processes that were within realistic costs.

Project Outcomes: The report (See: http://www.community.wa.gov.au/DFC/Communities/Women/Publications.htm) stimulated the creation of pilot projects implemented by the South West Health Region in Sydney and Curtin University and Central TAFE in Perth. The recommendations from the evaluation were supported by the Ministerial Council and are currently being implemented.

Case Study 2: Health Financial Analysis

Project Scope: Review of a $40m annual contract (between a large Health Sector organisation and the Health Department) to determine whether the contract was being effected as per the contract model.

Services Provided:  Fortis personnel reconstructed the complex model and conducted detailed financial analysis to review the basis of allocation and conducted a thorough financial review for the client.

Project Outcomes: The review and model provided comprehensive evidence that the contract was not being effected correctly, and ensured that several million dollars of contractual revenues (based on benchmark hospitals) were restored to our client.

Case Study 3: Resource Multinational Review

Project Scope: A large resources multinational required a review of its core mining operation's performance, including policies and procedures.

Services Provided:  Fortis reviewed the performance by applying a balanced scorecard model measured against relevant benchmarks and also conducted a thorough review of policies and procedures.

Project Outcomes: The resources multinational was provided with a detailed report which outlined the key gaps in terms of performance, policies and procedures, along with a strategic roadmap to close those gaps and achieve several millions in benefits.
