Improving services to the Western Australian aged & people with disabilities regardless of culture & language: Intercultural relationships between staff, & between staff & residents in residential facilities for the aged & people with disabilities.

Background to Aged Care & Disability Services

The aged care and disability service sectors face complex and growing challenges in managing a workforce which includes an increasing number of newly arrived refugees and migrants.  These workers provide services to a burgeoning client group from the established European, Asian, Aboriginal and mainstream cultures.

About the Project

This project is unique as it recognises the reality in residential care facilities and addresses effective delivery of care services that requires healthy relationships and sound communication in the context of the diversity of cultures both among workers and residents. This project provides supervisors and managers with the skill development necessary to lead in this complex environment.  This 18 month project aims to assess the training needs of culturally and linguistically diverse workers and ultimately develop, implement, refine and disseminate a training package for care workers and managers/supervisors.

The project will deliver a multi-faceted model that recognises and addresses the complex interplay of diversity around service providers, workers (especially those from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds), care residents and their families. The project will enable Aged Care and Disability Service providers to access training delivery and resources for care workers and their managers/supervisors in metropolitan and regional facilities. This, in turn, will improve services to culturally diverse clients and their families.

The project aims to apply, test and evaluate the model in three specific facilities. Beyond this initial phase, it is anticipated that each of the partner agencies – Brightwater and Uniting Church Homes will disseminate its use to other facilities within their jurisdiction and to their networks. The project focuses on relationships, culture, language and literacy training required by care workers and their managers/supervisors. The key objectives of the project are as follows:

  1. Training Needs Analysis
  2. Evaluate the Resources
  3. Consult with Stakeholders
  4. Design and Develop the Training Program
  5. Pilot the Program
  6. Refine the Resources
  7. Disseminate the Package
