On September 21st our National Director Mary Gurgone along with 80 other attendees came together to celebrate NAATI’s 40 years in Australia’s interpreting and services. Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs, Senator Hon. Zed Seselja recognised “NAATI’s role in ensuring the quality and standards of translators and interpreters is exceptionally valuable. It is essential that people in any community can communicate with each other.”

Mary was appointed to the NAATI Board of Directors on November 1, 2014. She migrated to Australia from Italy and has a lifelong commitment to cross-cultural and cross linguistic communication. She is enthusiastic about the NAATI role in setting quality standards for interpreting and translating, especially as our overseas-born population grows. NAATI was a global leader when it was established 40 years ago and the new certification system that is being introduced will go a long way towards again taking a leading role internationally.

Pivotal to the work of Fortis Consulting, as the state representative for Partners in Culturally Appropriate Care (PICACWA) in the age care sector, almost 20% (FECCA[1]) of Australians aged over 50 were born overseas in a non-English speaking country and face substantial barriers accessing services, which are often lacking cultural sensitivity. The demand from older Australians from a Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) background for age services is likely to increase dramatically over the next two decades. Fortis PICAC WA are working with service providers, government and community to develop a program that will be available to the aged care sector that enables service providers to bridge the gaps in communication when working with people from non-English speaking background.

The program will help service providers to communicate better with their non-English speaking clients as well as provide knowledge on accessing translating and interpreting services that best meets their clients’ needs.

So far 26 aged care providers have contributed through a survey that will shape focus group discussions with providers, family carers and interpreters who work with CALD elderly. Watch this space for further updates…
